Objective:

Students will gain an understanding of the importance of developing and maintaining a close relationship with their parent(s), grandparent(s), guardian or other adult figure.

Supporting Ideas:

  1. Explain why it is important for each teen to maintain or develop a close relationship with his or her parents.
  2. Discuss how we develop relationships with our parents.
  3. Show how strong parent/pre-teen relationships are advantageous to both parent and pre-teen.
  4. Show how strong support from parents, grandparents, etc. affects our life dreams and goals.
  5. Show how these relationships relate to a healthy life.

Health Standard:

  • Standard 1: Students will understand health promotion and disease prevention concepts and practices.
    • Indicator 1: Students will evaluate how personal behavior can impact the health of self, peers, and family.
      • Benchmark A: Model appropriate ways to express feelings in a variety of age-appropriate situations.
  • Standard 4: Students will use interpersonal communication skills to enhance personal health.
    • Indicator 1: Students will evaluate how communication affects relationships with family, peers, and community.
      • Benchmark B: Choose appropriate communication techniques when interacting with family, peers, and community.
  • Standard 4: Students will use interpersonal communication skills to enhance personal health.
    • Indicator 2: Students will evaluate and select effective communication skills which enhance personal health.
      • Benchmark A: Demonstrate healthy ways to express needs, wants, and feelings.
      • Benchmark B: Determine behaviors/situations which create bridges and barriers to effective communication.
