  1. Tell students that the goal of this class is to prevent out-of-wedlock births and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Tell them that the only sure way to avoid pregnancy or STDs is to abstain from sexual activity.
  2. Write the word “abstinence” on the board. Have students in groups of three come up with a definition of the word “abstinence”. (Provide resources for the students to reference such as web pages, dictionaries, or encyclopedias.) Groups will report back to the large group. Consensus-build to determine the most complete definition. Tell the students that in this course of study, abstinence means to refrain from sexual activity outside of marriage. Let students know that we will also be talking about abstinence as it relates to other activities that may delay us from our goals.
    • When we become educated about abstinence as it relates to the course of study, we will begin to understand why it is important in our lives and in the lives of our friends, our families, our community and our school.
    • During this education process we will begin to recognize behavior that can keep us from being successful or can make us successful.
    • As we understand these different behavior patterns we can begin to set goals and make specific plans for our day-to-day life and for our futures.
