Provide students with Handout #1: “Goals and Dreams Worksheet”.

  • Tell them the first list will be their day-to-day or immediate goals to accomplish each day for the rest of the school year.
  • The second and third lists will be longer-range goals: what they would like to accomplish by the end of the next five years and by the end of the next ten years.

This exercise will show the students:

  1. How to set goals.
  2. How to determine if they are practical or obtainable.
  3. How to plan to make their goals obtainable.
  4. How to reset plans to obtain goals.
  5. How to reset or reestablish realistic goals or reset goals that may change.

After this exercise has been completed, tell the students to keep this chart for review and update.

“Harlem”

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore –
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over –
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it just explode?

-Langston Hughes, 1951
