This course has been developed by a grant from the federal government
to facilitate discussion and give information on sexual abstinence.
This course is broken down into nine lessons. Sections (lessons)
can be designed in 30 to 45-minute segments. Each lesson has a “Note
to Home”. Please send these summaries home for parents/guardians
in order that they may be aware of the material being presented
in this course. Identify a contact person in the first “Note
to Home.”
The handouts for each lesson are linked from the lesson.
The ideal class size is 15-20 (or fewer) students; however, it
can be adapted for larger classes.
Regardless of how familiar you may be with the course material,
re-read the text before the sessions and underline key phrases.
Be familiar enough to use your own words. However, in order to make
the intended impact, use the main objective and supporting ideas
in the lesson outline to structure each session. Since you are the
instructor and most familiar with your local situation and class
members, adapt exercises and story examples accordingly.
Accept any kind of feedback graciously. Allow the young person
to use terms in his or her own vernacular. You can use the correct
terms again a little later.
Encourage students to see you after class with questions or concerns
they feel they cannot raise in the classroom. Please be especially
sensitive in your approach, as it is quite possible some of your
students may have been sexually abused at some time in their life.
Be prepared to make referrals to other professionals as appropriate.
When working with students regarding this material, do not make
assumptions or take anything for granted. See that no one is embarrassed
because of his or her lack of information or level of understanding.
Use eye contact. Students listen more closely and are more responsive
to those who show this assurance. The student needs this focused
attention. Students listen to those whom they feel respect and care
about them as individuals.
A listing of abstinence-related websites can be found under Web
Resources.
Stay on schedule. Begin and end sessions on time. Establish this
discipline at the first session and participants will continue to
respect it.
Decide from the first day to keep your good humor at all times.
It will serve you well.
This curriculum has been developed with great assistance from the
Governor’s Program
on Abstinence from the State of Louisiana.
