Tell students that today we will begin our class discussion on Communications with a look at how self-worth is taught and how self-worth is learned.

Refer to Handout #5: “Self-Worth”.

Tell the students that:

Self-worth is usually taught by parents or other adult figures who:

  • teach self-discipline by establishing boundaries for their children,
  • name consequences of overstepping those boundaries, and
  • are consistent in carrying through with consequences.

*Have students take time to fill out handout #5 now.

Discuss with students how parents set boundaries and what they are. (Possible answers: curfews, homework schedules, and household chores.) Discuss with students how parents are consistent in carrying through with consequences.

Tell students that they can gain self-worth by learning self-discipline. Some good ways to learn self-discipline are:

  • Doing for others.
  • Being helpful and thoughtful of family members.
  • Taking personal responsibilities seriously (chores, homework, personal hygiene and health).
  • Being true to yourself which means standing up for or standing by your values.
