Objective:

Students will understand the importance of establishing their own boundaries. The will learn to select and set these boundaries by choosing the right friends, avoiding high-risk situations, and learning how to deal with peer pressure.

Supporting Ideas:

  1. Show how establishing and maintaining boundaries will help ensure meeting our goals we set for life.
  2. Identify “high-risk” behavior and discuss how it can interfere in establishing goals for life.
  3. Show how choosing the “right” friends can further our life goals and keep us away from high-risk behavior.
  4. Discuss positive and negative peer pressure and how abstinence relates to peer pressure.

Health Standard:

  • Standard 1: Students will understand health promotion and disease prevention concepts and practices.
    • Indicator 1: Students will evaluate how personal behavior can impact the health of self, peers, and family.
      • Benchmark A: Model appropriate ways to express feelings in a variety of age-appropriate situations.
  • Standard 1: Students will understand health promotion and disease prevention concepts and practices.
    • Indicator 2: Students will analyze the impact of emotional, social, and physical health on various interrelated body parts.
      • Benchmark C: Examine ways to avoid, minimize, or cope with adolescent health problems.
  • Standard 3: Students will understand the benefits of practicing health-enhancing behaviors which reduce health risks.
    • Indicator 1: Students will evaluate health-enhancing behaviors which promote wellness.
      • Benchmark A: Distinguish short and long term consequences of risky and harmful behaviors.
      • Benchmark B: Analyze how social pressures can influence participation in risk taking behaviors.
      • Benchmark C: Analyze personal practices which promote life-long health and well being.
  • Standard 3: Students will understand the benefits of practicing health-enhancing behaviors which reduce health risks.
    • Indicator 3: Students will evaluate the role of personal responsibility in health-related decisions.
      • Benchmark B: Demonstrate individual responsibility in health-related decisions/choices.
  • Standard 4: Students will use interpersonal communication skills to enhance personal health.
    • Indicator 3: Students will analyze conflict and engage in healthy communication and resolution strategies.
      • Benchmark B: Demonstrate effective conflict resolution strategies.
      • Benchmark C: Demonstrate communication skills used to avoid potentially harmful situations.
